Nau mai, haere mai ki te tauihu o te wakareo-ä-ipurangi.
Welcome to the bow of this language website.
The tauihu is the bow of a canoe. Tauihu has been used as the metaphor for this site, as the collection of exercises and resources aims at helping you begin your journey into learning Te Reo Mäori. The initial design was in 2001, to support a te reo course being delivered at Te Ara Poutama, AUT. It has grown since then and is linked to its sister site, Te Rito, which is an immersion te reo site that has interactive games and stories for köhanga or pre-school aged children.
The exercises include interactives where you can play bingo, practise new vocabulary for days of the week, months of the year and body parts. Tikanga introduces you to the marae and has a section where you can learn the words to karakia (prayers). Waiata contains lyrics for well-known waiata. There are links to other popular Mäori sites and a support section, where you can find answers to common questions and send feedback to us. Or you can just e-mail this link.
The two sister sites to this one are:
